This space holds both heartbreak and love. Emily was taken from us in a way that never should have happened, and we carry that weight every day. But when we think of her, we keep coming back to who she was. A kind, radiant soul whose light still shines through everyone who knew her.
Her presence lives on in the lives she touched, in the words she left behind, and in the love she poured into everything she did. She lived with compassion, purpose, and so much joy. That is the Emily we want you to know.
We are better for having known her. When we stand with Emily, we carry her light forward. Not just in memory, but in the way we choose to love each other every single day.
Emily Steinhoff James gave everything she had to the people and causes she loved. She served her country as an Army veteran, fought for the underdog as a public defender, and brought that same heart into every part of her life.
She earned her law degree from UNC Chapel Hill and started her legal career in South Dakota, where she stood up for people who needed a voice. Her ties there ran deep. Years before Emily moved to North Carolina, her brother and sister had already made the move because of her.
Emily also loved the arts. She was a fixture in the Raleigh theater community, performing on stage, working as an assistant stage manager, and winning the RLT Diva crown in 2020. She had a way of pulling people in and making something beautiful out of whatever room she walked into.
More than anything, Emily loved her son. Miles is growing up with the love she poured into him, and she would have been right there cheering for him through all of it. That loss is one no family should have to carry.
She was the kind of person who showed up. Who texted to check in. Who left comments that made you feel like you mattered. We are holding onto every one of those words.
What she gave us lives on.
